¿Cómo saber cuándo reparar un saxofón?

Knowing whether a saxophone is in good condition is essential to ensuring a good musical performance and avoiding long-term problems. One of a musician's worst nightmares is having their instrument, which is ultimately their work tool, experience a technical problem that prevents them from playing. How to know if a saxophone is in good condition

Before scheduling an appointment at the Instrumentomanía repair shop, there are a number of key points you can evaluate at home to determine the condition of your saxophone and determine whether it needs urgent repair or not.

These are some of them:

Cracks and dents

To do this, you need to do a general inspection of the body and observe the condition of the saxophone. You should look for dents, deep scratches, or signs of corrosion. Although small marks are normal, serious dents can affect the instrument's airflow and tone.

Checking mechanisms

Another point we should test is the proper functioning of the keys and the various mechanisms. The keys should move smoothly and return to their original position without difficulty. If any are loose or stick, they may need adjustment or repair. It's also important to check that the key springs are in good condition and not rusty, as these ensure proper function.

Sneakers in good condition

These elements, also known as pads, are one of the most important parts of the saxophone, as their function is to seal the keys. It's important to check that they're clean, smooth, and free of cracks. If they're dry or cracked, they may not seal properly, affecting the sound, causing air leaks, or preventing the keys from opening correctly. Worn or loose pads should be replaced. Our technician can advise you on the most suitable materials so that, with a complete padding, your instrument will be as good as new.

Colors and smells

También podemos hacer una revisión visual del color del saxofón. El color del barniz debe ser uniforme, sin áreas de oxidación o decoloración excesiva. Asimismo, un olor a humedad o moho puede ser indicativo de problemas internos o falta de mantenimiento.

Prueba de sonido

Por último, si es posible, hay que tocar el saxofón y estar atentos a si se produce un sonido claro, sin vibraciones extrañas o dificultades en la emisión de notas.

Reparaciones más habituales en el saxofón

Aunque seamos muy cuidadosos con nuestro instrumento, a causa del uso normal o debido a algún desafortunado accidente, puede haber una serie de problemas que necesiten una reparación urgente. A continuación vamos a detallar cuáles son las reparaciones más habituales en el saxofón y las que más vemos en nuestro taller:

Fugas de aire

Las fugas de aire pueden deberse a alguna zapatilla rota o grieta que habría que examinar minuciosamente. Otro problema habitual son los desplazamientos o desalineación de la campana del saxofón debido a golpes, por leves que parezcan. Aunque físicamente sean imperceptibles, pueden afectar al registro grave del saxofón.

Corcho del tudel roto o faltante

Este es uno de los motivos de reparación más frecuentes pero por suerte su solución suele ser rápida. El tudel es la pieza curva que une la boquilla con el cuerpo del saxofón. En la parte que comunica con la boquilla hay un corcho que, con el uso se puede desgastar y romper o despegar. La solución es reemplazar ese corcho por una pieza nueva y asegurarse que no esté demasiado comprimido o seco para que dure por más tiempo.

Teclas atascadas

A veces puede suceder que si no se monta bien el saxofón, haya problemas con la llave de octava del saxofón que se dobla al montar el tudel de forma incorrecta. También debemos tener cuidado al guardar el saxofón en su estuche y comprobar que todas las llaves están en su sitio.

Consejos para mantener tu saxofón siempre en buen estado

Una vez el saxofón sale de nuestro taller como nuevo es importante hacer un correcto mantenimiento para que, aunque nos encante veros en nuestra tienda de Guadassuar (Valencia), el motivo de la visita no sea otro problema con el saxofón. Nuestro técnico Carlos os podrá asesorar y dar una serie de recomendaciones acerca del cuidado y mantenimiento de vuestro instrumento. Además, os podrá informar sobre los productos específicos que tenemos en nuestra tienda física para el cuidado de los instrumentos de viento.

Algunas de estas recomendaciones más importante son:

Eliminar la humedad antes de guardarlo

It's very important to clean the saxophone thoroughly after playing, both inside and out. Excess moisture from saliva can rust the instrument, wear down pads, and cause mold inside, which poses a health problem. There are chamois cloths that can be used to remove sweat residue from the outside, and microfiber cloths with a weight on one end can be used to clean the different parts of the saxophone inside. Pads can also be dried with products like Yamaha Powder Paper to remove saliva residue.

Keep the neck cork oiled

As we've seen, one of the main reasons for repairs in the workshop is a broken neck cork. The way to prevent this is to lubricate it with Vaseline, which we sell in a convenient lip-shaped container so it can be inserted smoothly and doesn't wear down under pressure.

Store it properly in its case

Unfortunately, many of the knocks saxophones take are caused by forgetting to zip it up once they're stored in their cases. Thinking they're closed, we pull on the handle, and the instrument ends up on the floor, causing dents, cracks, or misalignments. Our advice, in addition to using good, sturdy, rigid cases like Bags , is to always, always, check that the case is properly closed and that you handle it on stable surfaces.

Don't stop playing the saxophone

This is our technician's top tip: don't let your instrument sit dormant in its case for long periods of time, as it will suffer. Even if it's just for a short time, you should play it regularly so that it's in good condition when you need it, or at most, requires a minor checkup.

Periodic review with specialists

In addition to all this, we recommend an annual checkup, which we call a "tune-up," to keep it in good condition. The ideal time to perform this maintenance is usually in the summer, but these are also times when the workshop is in high demand.
